Peers Envisioning and Engaging in Recovery Services (PEERS), Oakland, CA

Bre Williams is the Senior Programs Manager and Advanced Level WRAP Facilitator at PEERS. Bre started working in the mental health field as a Transition Age Youth (TAY) advocate. From 2010 – 2012, she established herself as TAY leader in the community and became staff of TAY committee of Pool Of Consumer Champions (POCC), employed by PEERS, and co-created the Transition Age Youth Initiative, now known as the Transition Age Youth (TAY) Program.

In her current role, Bre extends her passion for wellness and resiliency to not only TAY, but adult and older adult populations as well through the Everyone Counts Campaign, providing mental health education to the African American and interfaith communities. Bre is very passionate about her work, sharing stories of resiliency, and fully believes that with hope, determination, and support, we can rediscover their core truths and live the life we desire.

Workforce Development of Youth Peer Counselors

Join SPARK (Students Providing and Receiving Knowledge) for a webinar on how Washington State is encouraging youths (17–26-year-olds) to explore careers as Certified Peer Counselors. This program, started at New Horizons Alternative High School in Pasco, WA, has partnered with Washington Health Care Authority to help build workforce development of youth peer counselors and provide access to the 40-hour Certified Peer Counselor (CPC) training after graduation.

Learning Objectives:
·    List at least 3 benefits of having youth Certified Peer Counselors in the workforce
·    Describe 3 lessons learned for program improvement from the first three cohorts of students
·    Discuss the importance of apprenticeships in preparing youth for the workforce including engagement with youth of color and youth that are incarcerated.
