IT STARTS AT THE FRONT DESK: A video training and community discussion about culturally competent mental health care, featuring Hextor Pabon (on video) and Frances Priester Moss (in person) of the New York State Office of Mental Health’s Bureau of Cultural Competence



·        Come view a video training on the importance of cultural competence that ensures that recipients of care feel welcomed and affirmed as soon as they engage with your agency

·        Get an overview of the rich array of free, on-demand training resources offered on the OMH website – you can show them at your own agency, and use them to train your colleagues and staff, free of charge!

·        Take part in a community stakeholder discussion about cultural competence implementation – what are the challenges, obstacles and opportunities?

·        WHO IS INVITED TO THIS EVENT? All community stakeholders, especially mental health management, providers, consumers, peer specialists, and family members.

·        WHAT DOES IT COST? This event is entirely free of charge.

·        HOW DO I SIGN UP? Please fax or e-mail your name, organization and e-mail as shown below.

·        WHAT TRAINING TOPICS WILL BE PRESENTED AT FUTURE MEETINGS? That’s up to you! The trainings available through the Bureau of Cultural Competence are extensive. We can learn more about culturally competent care with specific populations, including LGBT individuals; a seven-step program for assessing and improving an agency’s cultural competence; ways to bridge cultural gaps between recipients and providers of care; ways that consumers and other stakeholders can advocate effectively for their needs; approaches to language access and interpretation; and much more.

The New York City Regional Multicultural Advisory Committee of the New York State Office of Mental Health meets three times a year, in January, May, and September. All stakeholders are invited to attend.
