Breaking Down Barriers: Successful State Policy Strategies for
Promoting Hiring of Peer Staff with CJ Backgrounds

Tuesday, May 7th, 3:00 - 4:30 PM EASTERN

Presenters: John B. Allen Jr., Special Assistant to the Commissioner at the New York State Office of Mental Health; Ellen M. Healion, MA, Executive Director of Hands Across Long Island, Inc.

Unfortunately, increased opportunities for peers to become integral parts of the behavioral health workforce have not always resulted in a careful examination of state policies that negatively impact the ability of many peers to take advantage of these opportunities. For many peers with histories of involvement in the criminal justice system, the old adage of "do not apply" still loudly rings true, and most are frustrated in their efforts to achieve their goals of being trained and working as Peer Specialists, Recovery Coaches, and other positions providing Recovery Services. This webinar will provide an overview of the background clearance process implemented by the New York State Office of Mental Health and the impact that it has had on the recruitment, hiring, and retention of peer staff with histories of involvement with the criminal justice system. The webinar will explore how provider agencies and prospective employees collaborate to meet the requirements of the clearance process. It will also address the concerns that policy makers have about the impact of revising these policies on public safety.

Advocates, peers, representatives of consumer-operated programs, and network and policy makers are encouraged to join us.
