[NYAPRS Enews] Urge NYS Policymakers to 'Reinvest for Recovery' at Jan 31 NYAPRS Legislative Day!

NYAPRS Note: In the next few years, NYS budget and healthcare reform
efforts will transform service delivery in ways by reducing investments
in hospital and ER use that will only work if appropriate investments
are made in the community lifeline services -housing, peer services and
employment- that are critical to helping people recover. Closing one
door only works if we open the other. There is ample evidence that
housing and economic stability and connection to peer support greatly
reduces repeat hospital use while helping people thrive.

During the coming NYS budget session, mental health advocates will come
together to press policy and budget makers in the Administration and
Legislature to ensure that an appropriate portion of the considerable
amount of savings that will be realized:

* by the reduced use of Medicaid hospitals and emergency rooms
brought about by BHOs, health homes and the move to fully capitated
managed care and

* from the expected downsizing of the state hospital system

will be reinvested to boost housing, peer support and employment related
services and supports.

Don't miss this historic critical opportunity - reducing hospital use
without boosting community supports will only repeat the
deinstitutionalization failures of the past.

A large turnout at the NYAPRS January 31 Legislative Day will send the
right message to Albany: see the draft schedule below that our Public
Policy Committee has approved and contact information for our regional
representatives who will help make sure your voice is heard!
