Federal CMHS Director Harding, National Consumer Leader Ashenden to
Address Current Challenges in Mental Health Care at Clubhouse's 18th
Annual Mental Illness Awareness Day

The list of challenges in contemporary mental health circles has become
daunting for service providers and consumers:

* The implications of the new Mental Health Parity and national
health insurance reform laws

* The shrinking availability of public dollars and public
services

* Increased complexities among mental health customers with
concurrent medical problems, substance abuse, developmental
disabilities, and cultural diversity

* The rise in PTSD among returning soldiers and veterans

* The explosion in the development and marketing of new
psychiatric medications

With these challenges in mind, Clubhouse of Suffolk is proud to announce
its speakers and workshops for its 18th annual Mental Illness Awareness
Day to be held on Thursday, October 7th at the Huntington Hilton:

One of the two foremost leaders in the formulation on national mental
health policy, Keynote Speaker Frances M. Harding serves as Director of
the Center for Mental Health Services (CMHS). CMHS is a part of the
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), an
operating division of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
CMHS leads national efforts to improve prevention and mental health
treatment services for all Americans. Featured Speaker, Consumer
advocate Peter Ashenden, Director of Consumer Affairs at Optum Health,
has become one of the strongest consumer voices in the development of
public mental health initiatives. In this role with Optum, one of the
nation's largest health and wellness organizations serving nearly 60
million people, Peter is responsible for the development of new and
innovative mutual support programs that increase the ability of affected
persons to pursue recovery.

The all-day event will also feature workshops addressing cutting-edge
issues with experts on topics such as:

* "300 New Psych Meds in the FDA Pipeline: What's a Savvy
Consumer To Do?" with Clubhouse Medical Director Dr. Frank Dowling
*	"The Stigma of Mental Illness and the Law," with Attorney
Carolyn Wolf
*	"From Poverty to Prosperity: How People in Recovery Can Achieve
Financial Freedom" with a panel of resource providers
*	"The Impact of Street Drugs on People with Mental Illnesses"
with local science researchers

A behavioral health trade show, featuring Long Island resources that
assist people and families with mental health issues, will run all day.
Sponsors for the event to date include Adelphi University, the law firm
of Fusco, Brandenstein & Rada, PC, Suffolk County National Bank, Profile
Insurance, South Oaks Hospital/Broadlawn Manor, and Janssen
Pharmaceutica.

The not-for-profit Clubhouse of Suffolk, Inc., founded in 1990 by
families of the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), has grown to
become a highly respected psychiatric rehabilitation program for people
whose lives have been disrupted by mental illness. The agency now serves
more than 1,200 people in a range of services in Suffolk County. For
