Gov. David Paterson said he hopes for three-way (or is it a six-way
agreement now, given the Senate leadership?) preliminary agreements to
address the budget shortfall by Labor Day and said he would like to
"shoot for" either Sept. 23rd or 29th as dates to call back the
legislature to vote.

Paterson said he would not, as he has in the past, publicize a "menu

" of budget-cutting options.

"The problem that I find when you put out a menu of options is that you
then get a menu of negative advertising trying to turn the public
against specific ways of budgeting," he said, referring to the slew of
attack ads

and the Greater New York Hospital Association, which helped precipitate
the governor's meteoric fall in the polls during the budget. (He got

"And to alleviate that kind of confusion, what I'm asking is for the
advocates themselves, as well as legislators, as well as our office, to
come up with a menu that we can all agree on." Paterson continued.

The governor added that he does not plan any new taxes or fees, also a
lesson learned from the budget.

"I don't think fees or taxes are acceptable at this time," he said.
