Wellness Website Proves to be Useful Resource

You are encouraged to visit the Wellness Summit website
<http://www.bu.edu/cpr/resources/wellness-summit> , hosted by Boston
University's Center for Psychiatric Services in conjunction with an
NIDRR/SAMHSA-funded Rehabilitation Research and Training Center. The
site is designed to provide information on promoting wellness for people
with mental illnesses. The "Pledge for Wellness" also appears there,
and eight new signatures have been added. If your organization is
interested in signing the Pledge, please contact Paolo del Vecchio
<mailto:paolo.delvecchio at samhsa.hhs.gov?subject=Pledge%20for%20Wellness>
.

A new resources section will soon be available! In this centralized
location, you'll find material and information on promoting wellness and
reducing disparities of early mortality and co-morbidity. Information
will be organized for consumers/families, providers, and researchers.

"Project LAUNCH" Blasts Off at SAMHSA

Wellness is for kids, too! SAMHSA is now accepting applications for
Project LAUNCH (Linking Actions for Unmet Needs in Children's Health), a
new grant program which promotes the physical, emotional, social, and
behavioral health of young children, birth to eight years of age.

States, territorial governments, and federally recognized tribal
organizations may apply for grants to provide childhood service programs
which include mental health consultation, parenting skills training, and
other family support services. Funding of $5.5 million annually over
five years will be awarded for six grants. Applications must be
received by June 12, 2008.

News from CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services)

*	CMS has approximately $13 million in available funding to
continue supporting States' efforts to address complex issues in
long-term care reform. In addition to approximately $8 million in Real
Choice Systems Change Grant funding, CMS will also award $5 million for
Aging and Disability Resource Center/Area Agencies on Aging grants.
Applications are due no later than July 17, 2008 and must be submitted

*	CMS announced in April that grants of $50 million to 20 states

Wellness in the News

*	New York State Psychiatric Centers will now begin monitoring
three cardiometabolic indicators for all inpatients: Body Mass Index,
glucose, and cholesterol. The purpose is to use metrics for health
improvement in patients with mental illnesses, which will also encourage
collaboration among physicians, nurses, mental health providers, and
pharnacists. This initiative demonstrates how mental health treatment
can be easily integrated with physical health. [Find out more
information at New York State Office of Mental Health

*	Recent research at the South Beach Psychiatric Center (SBPC) in
New York determined that "access to regular primary and preventive
health care integrated with mental health services optimizes care plans
and treatment." As part of the Healthy Road Initiative, consumers now
have increased access to primary health care services, including
specialty consults, treatment planning with increased collaboration
between physicians and mental health providers, and health education and
wellness services. [Visit South Beach Psychiatric Center

Oregon:

Meghan Caughey <mailto:meghan.caughey at co.benton.or.us> pioneered the
Benton County <http://www.co.benton.or.us/index.php> Peer Wellness
Program, a peer-led support group that integrates mental and physical
health. As the Coordinator, Meghan oversees other Peer Wellness
Counselors and the LOTUS Group (Lifestyles Overcoming Troubles Utilizing
Support). This innovative approach to wellness aims to redefine what is
possible for people diagnosed with mental illnesses. Peers do outreach,
ask questions about each other's health, and even accompany each other
to physician visits if requested.

"I intend to make it such that persons who are newly diagnosed will look
around in their community and see many role models who have mental
illnesses, who are engaged in meaningful contributing roles, and who
live healthy lifestyles," Meghan stated.

Massachusetts:

On April 14-15, 2008, The Boston University Center for Psychiatric
Rehabilitation <http://www.bu.edu/cpr> 's From Innovations to Practice
Conference in Boston prominently highlighted the SAMSHA/CMHS National
Wellness Vision and Pledge to reduce premature mortality by 10 years in
10 years through several collaborative presentations. Drs. David Shern,
Peggy Swarbrick and Dori Hutchinson highlighted the Pledge in their
Institute "Integrating Physical and Mental Health'; Drs. Sergio
Aguilar-Gaxiola, Lisa Razzano and Dori Hutchinson elaborated on the
vision in their presentation " Health Disparities among Minorities and
Others," and it was central in the presentation "Health as Foundation
for Recovery" made by Drs. Peggy Swarbrick, John Pelletier and Dori
Hutchinson. The conference attracted 1000 people from around the world,
including 38 different countries.

New Jersey:

The Collaborative Support Programs of New Jersey (CSP-NJ
<http://www.cspnj.org/> ) in collaboration with the University of
Medicine and Dentistry of NJ, School of Health Related Professions,
Department of Psychiatric Rehabilitation and Counseling hosted a
Wellness & Recovery Conference on March 27 & 28, 2008. With over 500
total attendees, the conference promoted wellness with workshops such as
"Shared Decision Making" and "Complete Wellness: Within a Consumer's
Reach." According to Dr. Peggy Swarbrick the event attracted persons in
recovery, family members, professionals, academics and policy makers who
networked and engaged in thoughtful dialogues regarding how to
proactively impact the health and wellness of persons living with mental
illness. CSP-NJ has adopted the 10 by 10 goal in New Jersey and is
taking a lead role in strategically planning for success.

New York:

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)-NYC Metro is well
underway on their Wellness Initiative. This year, their annual
fundraising walk for mental health, NAMI Walks on May 10th will focus on
wellness by not only generating awareness about mental health issues,
but also offering yoga, health screenings, massage therapy, and
take-home health literature to participants.

In addition, NAMI-NYC Metro has developed a six-week wellness course on
stress relief for mental health consumers which is in its second year.
Metrics for the program show increased commitment to a healthy lifestyle
among participants. Finally, they have partnered with the NYC Dept. of
Health & Mental Hygiene on "Mind Your Health" wellness workshops with
topics such as sexual wellness and healthy relationships. "It is our
goal to provide them with the tools and information necessary to
advocate for their own wellbeing," stated Katie Linn, Program Associate
at NAMI-NYC Metro.

For more information, see the NAMI-NYC Metro
<http://www.naminycmetro.org/> website or contact Katie Linn

Wellness Fact:

Housing and other residential services impact wellness of individuals.

A study by Leff, McPartland, Banks, Dembling, Fischer & Allen (2004)
examined factors that protect persons with severe mental illnesses from
early mortality. The study showed that preventing early mortality is
substantially about housing. With all other things equal, the study
showed that about 240 lives could have been saved during the time period
of the study with only a 10% increase in residential services.

Quote-of-the-Month:

"You can't have quality of life without quantity of life."

--H. Stephen Leff, Ph.D., co-author of the above study
