Job Description

Senior Associate for Policy and Advocacy

 

The Coalition is the umbrella trade association and public policy
advocacy organization of the New York City metropolitan area's
behavioral health community, representing over 100 nonprofit
community-based mental health provider agencies. Taken together, these
agencies serve more than 350,000 adults and children and deliver the
entire continuum of mental health care in practically every neighborhood
of New York City and surrounding areas.

Position Description

The Senior Associate for Policy and Advocacy reports directly to the
Executive Director and is responsible for helping to develop and
implement many of The Coalition's policy and advocacy activities.
Specific responsibilities include: analyzing New York City and State
behavioral health budgets, coordinating and staffing committees of the
Board of Directors; preparing and presenting the agency's policy
positions through testimony, briefs, and other advocacy materials;
representing The Coalition, organizing and leading advocacy initiatives,
including forums, legislative visits, and media events; and working with
government and elected officials to adopt and implement policies that
will enhance the community mental health sector in New York City and
State.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate would possess a master's degree in public policy,
public administration, social work, or other relevant/equivalent areas.
Previous advocacy and public policy experience is a major plus. The
ideal candidate should have excellent research, analytic, and writing
skills; public speaking and presentation skills; networking skills and
ability to work in coalitions; as well as the ability to work in a high
productivity and fast-paced environment. A candidate's qualifications
would be greatly enhanced by knowledge of special needs housing and
chemical dependence field. Facility with computers is a must.
