NYAPRS Note: The NYAPRS Board of Directors is very pleased to announce
its 2007 honorees for exemplary contributions to the advancement of the
recovery, rehabilitation and rights of New Yorkers with psychiatric
disabilities. 

The honorees include Governor Eliot Spitzer for advancing his 'Patient
First' community-centered agenda, bringing a new spirit of reform,
candor and collaboration to state agency efforts and for his commitment
to sweeping prison mental health reforms; former Senator Nicholas Spano
for his long record of policy leadership spanning the Community
Reinvestment Act of 1993 to the 'SHU' Bill of 2007, the New York Times
for a decade of editorials and news coverage on issues ranging from
Reinvestment to adult home to prison reform, Ray Ortiz for his
passionate leadership on the SHU campaign and recovery pioneers Ed
Knight and Jacki McKinney. 

These heroes will be honored at the upcoming October 3-5 NYAPRS Silver
Anniversary Conference at the Nevele Grande (www.nyaprs.org
<http://www.nyaprs.org/> ) and the January NYAPRS Annual Legislative Day
in Albany.

 

NYAPRS 2007 AWARD WINNERS

 

BRENDAN NUGENT LEADERSHIP AWARD 

The Brendan Nugent Leadership Award is presented to an inspiring
consumer leader in promoting and advocating for the empowerment of
people with psychiatric disabilities in New York State.

Peter Ashenden, former executive director, Mental Health Empowerment
Project, Albany, NY 

 

FRANCES Olivero ADVOCACY AWARD  

The Frances Olivero Advocacy Award is presented to an individual who has
demonstrated inspiring community leadership and unique contributions in
advocacy around a particular issue on behalf of New Yorkers with
psychiatric disabilities.

Raymond Ortiz, Urban Justice Center, Mental Health Alternatives to
Solitary Confinement, New York, NY

 

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD  

The Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an individual who has a
long record of exemplary contributions to the recovery, rehabilitation
and/or rights of New Yorkers with psychiatric disabilities.

Edward Knight, VP for Recovery and Rehabilitation, ValueOptions,
Colorado Springs, CO; founding  executive  director, Mental Health
Empowerment Project, Albany, NY

Honorable Nicholas Spano, former Senate Mental Health Committee
Chairman, co-sponsor, Community Reinvestment Act of 1994, White Plains,
NY

Steven Greenfield, former executive director, Mental Health Association
in Nassau County, Hempstead, NY; Association for Community Living New
York State, Albany, NY

 

MARTY SMITH MEMORIAL AWARD 

The Marty Smith Memorial Award is presented to a uniquely inspired and
dedicated provider who has demonstrated exemplary contributions to the
advancement of best practices in service to New Yorkers with psychiatric
disabilities.

PARTNERS WITH FAMILIES AWARD  

The Partners with Families Award is presented to an individual who has
demonstrated inspiring leadership in the advancement of the alliance of
families and consumers in promoting the recovery, rehabilitation and
rights of people with psychiatric disabilities.

Paige Pierce, executive director, Families Together of NYS, Albany, NY

Sylvia Lask, Board of Directors Mental Health Association in NYS, Bronx,
NY   

 

PUBLIC EDUCATION/MEDIA AWARD  

The Public Education/Media Award is presented to an individual inside or
outside of the media who has demonstrated extraordinary public education
efforts that advance the needs of and/or that highlight the
accomplishments of New Yorkers with psychiatric disabilities.

PUBLIC POLICY LEADERSHIP AWARD  

The Public Policy Leadership Award is presented to a legislator who has
demonstrated outstanding public leadership on behalf of New Yorkers with
psychiatric disabilities.

FAITH & FELLOWSHIP AWARD

The Jason Brody Award is presented to an individual who has been an
extraordinary source of kindness, caring and devotion to people within
their mental health community.

Quincy Boykin Memorial Award

The Quincy Boykin award is presented to a person in heartfelt
recognition of your inspiring contributions to the recovery,
empowerment, integration and inclusion of all New Yorkers with
psychiatric disabilities

EXECUTIVE DIRECTORS Award

The executive director's award is presented in recognition of
outstanding public leadership on behalf of New Yorkers with psychiatric
and related disabilities.
