NYAPRS Note: The following is based on materials from Lauren Spiro,
Director of Public Policy for the National Coalition of Mental Health
Consumer/Survivor Organizations (www.ncmhcso.org) in Washington (ph:
978-590-2014, laurenspiro1 at gmail.com).
Call Washington Today to Urge Restored Funding to National Consumer-Run
Assistance Centers!
You may recall that the Bush Administration budget for this year
proposed to cut funding to national consumer-run and supporter national
technical assistance centers, including our good friends at the National
Empowerment Center, The National Mental Health Consumers' Self-Help
Clearinghouse and CONTAC who've done so much to advance our recovery,
rehabilitation and rights agenda across the nation for so many years.
This is a critical week in Congress, a time when proposed budget
legislation is being 'marked up', e.g. shaped for final action.
According to Lauren, "This is THE TIME TO AMPLIFY YOUR VOICE. Please
call your representatives in Washington and let them know you want this
"report language request", below, in the "Labor H' / SAMHSA bill. The
focus is on the house side. If you have time also contact your senators
and BE HEARD."
If you're from a state that has representation on either the House or
Senate Committee (on Labor, Health and Human Services), please call your
Congress member and Senator today at the numbers listed below and leave
the following message (it's a bit long but necessary):
"I'm a registered voter from your district who's calling to urge your
support for the conference agreement that restores $2 million to
continue the current level of funding of the CMHS mental health
consumer-run and consumer-supporter-run national technical assistance
centers and $2 million to continue consumer-run statewide networking
grants as proposed by the Senate."
Dan Fisher, Joseph Rogers and Lauren will be on the hill this week
advocating (and USPRA is also working to support these restorations) but
we need ALL of you to help too. We are competing with hundreds of other
groups.
See the attached lists for the House and Senate Labor HHS Subcommittees
with phone numbers.
